Busy being creative!

Everyone is so delighted to be back in school and to be among their friends! We have had such a fun week and we have got up to a lot since coming back to school. We cannot wait to show you all that we have been up to in our wonderful school building 🙂

First up: St. Patrick’s Day
We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by learning about our Patron Saint of Ireland and our beautiful island. We did a general knowledge quiz on Ireland and we learnt a lot! We then decided to make some shamrocks to decorate our classroom. Have a look at them below.

Secondly, as it is now Spring, we wanted to get some art up to represent the season we are now in. Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring! We decided to do a collaborative piece on birds in a tree. We used oil pastels for this and learnt how to blend them together. Have a look at our finished piece. Aren’t 5th class such talented artists?!

Thirdly, we made some optical art cubes. Optical art is a style of visual art that uses optical illusions. I’m getting dizzy just looking at them!

As we were feeling great to be back in school, we decided to make a motivational wall that is full of quotes to inspire us and others as well. We put it up in our entrance way so we can read the inspiring words every morning as we arrive to school. We hope they inspire you too!

We also had a super busy week reading aloud our fantastic novels! We wrote these before the Christmas break, but never managed to draw a cover for our stories. Our stories are now bound and hanging proudly on our wall. We LOVED listening to each other’s stories. We have some amazing story-tellers in 5th class!

In 5th class, we decided to refresh our memories on some math topics we completed a while ago. One of these topics was perimeter and area. We had such fun being archaeologists for the day, measuring the size of each excavation plot. We even decided to find the area and perimeter of each letter in our own name. Have a look at some of our work below!

Last, but not least, we celebrated World Down Syndrome Day by wearing odd socks and we also made ourselves more aware. We learnt about some of the perceptions linked with Down Syndrome, while also reading a story about a boy with Down Syndrome written by his sister. We really did learn a lot! We then made our own pair of odd socks and wrote about what makes each one of us unique.

We hope you enjoyed having a look at all we have been busy doing this past week. Thanks for reading!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in 5th class!

In 5th class, we have been working hard on the run up to Christmas to help bring some Christmas Cheer into the school and beyond! We hope you like all that we have been working on.

This year we were given the task of making the Christmas Crib. We were thrilled to get to make it and we had SO much fun doing it. Have a look at the process from the beginning to the finished product.

We also drew and coloured some beautiful nativity scene pictures. We focused on pattern and colour in these. Don’t they look fantastic?!

We were also busy working on some other artwork for the walls. We had a go at creating the Aurora Borealis using chalk and black sugar paper. They look like they could be photographs!

We also had to decorate our classroom, so we decided to cut out some lovely snowflakes to hang from the ceiling. It really feels like it’s snowing inside. We also made our own advent calendar, which we are having such fun opening every day. Lastly, we just had to create the Grinch, especially after Norman, from Raheny Library, read aloud How the Grinch Stole Christmas! He also told us some cracking Christmas jokes.

Happy Christmas everyone!

Long division

In class we have started learning about long division. It is so tricky, but everyone is working so hard and I am so proud of them all!

Here is a little video that we watched in school to help them learn the steps involved with long division. We also loved watching this rap on how to solve long division sums. It has really helped us to remember the steps involved.

Enjoy!

There are Artists among us

I am continually amazed at the art work that the children complete each week. They put a lot of effort into it and they always look amazing. Last week we looked at Picasso and created our own Picasso style portraits. The children had fun being creative with this one. We were also learning about the Celts in history, so we created these amazing Celtic knots. Super work everyone, they are fantastic! We also learnt about ogham writing and we even gave it a try ourselves. The children either wrote their name or an Irish word of their choice.

Amazing artists!

Science week

5th class had such a great week doing some amazing science experiments and even making and tasting an astronaut’s meal. During science week, we were learning about soils. At home we did a soil experiment to find out what type of soil we had. We also made some edible soil layers – they really enjoyed this, especially getting to eat them! Yum! We even watched some cool experiments online. We watched a man from the Explorium carry out a science experiment using the Tesla coil. However, the highlight of the week was the astronaut’s dinner. We learned all how astronauts had to adapt their food in order for it to stay fresh in space. We then made our own astronaut’s dinner as they would make it. We even got to taste it. We had lots of fun this week learning!

Cheers!

Show racism the red card!

The senior classes in the school undertook this programme on racism. You can read more about it here: http://theredcard.ie/. During the classroom session, the idea is to work with young people to clarify what is racism and how to respond to it.

We watched a video and had a whole-class conversation. To show our support we made some fantastic posters against racism. Look at us below showing off our posters!

Well done 5th class!

Hallowe’en Madness!

Hi everyone,

Here in 5th class we were working really hard making lots of spooky decorations for our classroom and around the school. We were also learning Hallowe’en lámh signs and we even had a mad hair day! Check out the photos and videos below to see some of the things we got up.

Enjoy!

Bia

We are working on bia (food) in school this month. So far we have learnt the name of lots of different kinds of food. We have also revised the words ól (drink) and ith (eat) in class and for homework as well, which fits perfectly with our new theme for Gaeilge. We also learnt about the food pyramid as Gaeilge. The children enjoyed learning about the different sections in the food pyramid. The photo below shows the picture from our textbooks that we used to teach us about the types of food.

Here is a video to help you with the pronunciation of many different foods.
